Just watched a special on the food network about pad thai. They were saying the basic ingredients for the sauce was tamarind , palm sugar and fish sauce.
Im trying to find a substitute or a way out of using fish sauce . What can i use that would work and keeping the recipe at least recognizable as pad thai ? any suggestions ?

fish sauce is gonna be tough to replace with any success. soy sauce is close to it in saltiness, but not flavor.
hmmm, the more i think about it, fish sauce is made from salted fish and pineapple, so maybe some soy and pineapple juice?

my mom has to use the vegetarian fish sauce, we are never quite sure whats in the real stuff. the vegetarian sauce doesnt take away from the authentic flavor of the sauce
