A few members asked about my foot. Frankly, I don't really know what the problem is. I'm frustrated & don't have any clear answers. I rarely get sick, & don't have a GP. Everyone specializes.

About 2 years ago my foot swelled up (below the ankle) so badly, I couldn't get a shoe on, bend my ankle & was in pain. Went to the ER. They did an ultrasound (no x-rays), & called in scripts for antibiotics & Ibuprofin (sp). They never gave me a diagnosis. I did try to find out what the problem was, but only got a huge bill - no answers.

Fast forward to about ten days ago. My big toe (same foot) swelled up & was inflamed/red, & tremendously painful. I looked on the internet for a foot doc in my area. Found one close by who was a foot doctor/surgeon, & her credentials sounded pretty good. I made an appointment & arranged for transportation. She examined my foot, & told me "I'm sorry, I can't help you. Here's a list of surgeons/foot docs. You need to go to a surgeon ASAP." I said I didn't understand. You're a foot doctor & surgeon, why can't you help me, please. I asked if she could take an x-ray. She did, & said everything was fine. She called in a script for antibiotics, told me to soak my feet. I did, & the skin around my toe came off & the toe hurt even more. Now, I'm going into panic mode.

My friend, who has the same insurance, did a search, found a few docs & I made an appointment, again. I filled out the forms. When I saw him he asked if I smoked & how much. He loudly insisted You must stop NOW, & it's expensive. He loudly, again, asked why do I wear nail polish. Don't I know it's putting paint on my feet. He kept on & on, asking for phone #s of doc's I have seen. He wanted ro remove the nail. I asked several times if there was another alternative. His staff did take x-rays. They didn't turn out, & he had them take x-rays again. I heard him say something about an abscess (in another room), & again, talking to the x-ray (not me) abscess and something about the bone.

He removed the nail, & told me to soak my foot, use neosporin, & put a bandaide on it. When I got home I was in pain. Couldn't walk. Made a few calls & found I could have an in-home nurse change the bandages & clean the wound - provided the Doc approved same. I don't want to go back to this guy. I've had some in-home help.

I just don't understand why the problem wasn't found & corrected previously. Not sure what to do next. Thanks for listening.

Man, CC, that sounds horrible! And scary!

So, the problem was finally determined to be an abscess under the toenail? Damn, that must have hurt like hell!

Hoping you will feel better and better day by day!

Cali, that sounds awful. I'm glad they finally found the problem, in spite of the doctor's bad 'bedside manners'.

Hopefully, you'll heal quickly and be back on your feet & in the kitchen!

Dang, that sounds horrible. I've broke a toe I can only imagine how much having a nail removed would hurt, especially on your big toe.
Good luck and hope you are able to get around / back to normal ASAP.

There are lots of things I left out. Performing surgery in his office, not giving me a diagnosis, not prescribing antibiotics or pain meds, & screaming at me. It wasn't entirley about his bedside manner. He said - got some tylonol at home, neopsorine & bandaides. I had a few (probably old) tylenol, a few bandaides & neosporine from (I just learned) expired in 2004. He said, just pick up some tylenol from the drugstore. I'm bandaged up, just had surgery in the doc's/surgeon's office, & he expected me to go to a pharmacy, - when he could have easily called it in to a pharm I use that delivers. I asked if he had bandages, & he handed me bandaides. It was the most painful experience I've ever had. He called the receptionist in to see the abscess - "Look at that." I have a high tolerance to pain, but yelled & cried. That's how painful the procedure was. His comment was "I do this all the time to children."

I'm thinking about consulting w/ an attorney - That's why I didn't want to get into the specifics. The primary goal is to get well.

Sounds like gout/something going on that eventually became an infection.
Gout becoming---toe cellulitis/bad infection is my first thought after reading this thread.

You said the doctor was nasty and seemed to be very uncaring with you during the surgery.
He performed the surgery, but you said you had a nurse coming in to change the bandages for you.

So a foot surgeon kicked you to the curb (basically) and now you're left on your own with a nurse to come in and visit.

Something isn't right about this.
Not right at all.

What an experience, CC, and I feel very sorry for you and your situation. Your account of the way you were treated was appalling. Get well soon.

He called in his receptionist?? Now that's out of line and a HIPPA violation! I've worked in healthcare for 27 yrs and I've never heard of such horrible behavior - I'm so sorry you had to go through that (((Hugs))).
As for your toenail, if you have some epsom salts, try soaking your foot in warm water & epsom at least once per day, keeping the area clean and dry. Also try to keep your foot elevated and work on weight bearing a little at a time until you can walk - that may take a week or two...I hope you get to feeling better soon :)

I'm sorry to hear about your foot too :(. My doctor fusses a lot about things too, but he has seen polish on my toenails and never said a word about it. I think I may just go take mine off .

Terrible bedside manner! After all of that is your foot getting better?
