Starting sunflower seeds inside!!

Every year, I plant sunflowers directly into my large pots outside, and every year the damned squirrels dig up and eat the seeds! Sunflowers do not like being transplanted.

This week, a customer at my hardware store told me that she starts sunflower seeds in individual peat pots for that very reason. When the seedlings have grown their second set of leaves, she rips off the top part of the peat pots and drops them into holes she's dug outside. That way, the roots are not disturbed.

Wa-la! Brilliant!

So, I started 16 seeds yesterday - 2 mammoth, 7 dwarf, and 7 autumn colors.

Every garden needs at least one sunflower!

You do not have to remove any of the peat moss pot. The roots will grow right through it. The only problem with peat is if it dries out it is really hard to rehydrate. So just make sure that they are damp at all times.

That's a great idea! I love sunflowers. I definitely need to get some going. We can probably plant them in the yard now, though.
