Remember Tom Clancy's book Sum Of All Fears when the terrorists obtained an Israeli nuke and blew up Baltimore? I just received the following info on one of my former company's retired captains who recently died. The event took place 51 years ago.
Quote:
Bob was a copilot on a B-47 involved in a mid air collision with an
F-86. The F-86 driver ejected and instead of a free fall to a lower altitude
and warmer air, his chute opened immediately and he damn near froze to death
before landing in a field.
The B-47 had the right outboard engine knocked lose from the aft attachment and
was hanging at a 45 degree angle causing a lot of drag. Part of the tail was
also damaged.
The big problem was the 8,000# nuclear bomb they were carrying. It was decided to
lower the weight before landing and the weapon was dropped in Savannah Bay. The
weapon was not armed, according to Bob and the rest of the crew.
There has been much controversy about this weapon and many searches have been
made. To the best of my knowledge, it has never been found.
