Huh?? There is a place in the Chicagoland area that is quiet??????????????
We are close to Midway.... think jets on a mission to get altitude fast....
I hear gun shots outside in the middle of the night at least once a month followed by police chopper circling for the next half hour. Otherwise, I live in a very quiet hilltop residential street.

Well, if I go outside without my children..... and the doors and windows are shut..... then no.... I hear NADA! YAY!!!
However, someone forgot to tell my children that Daddy cut that cord thingy at birth for all 3 of them and they do NOT need to be within 2 feet of me at all times so.... I hear WAY too much.

I live in the woods... I hear wild animals and once in awhile the weird neighbors!

I live in downtown San Antonio - cars, sirens, music, car alarms, trains, drunken fools - but I don't even hear it anymore. I guess my brain just filters it out. (Of course, with 7 kids my house might actually be noisier on the inside!) I do notice that when I go to the coast, I'm always struck by how quiet it is.

I live right by a railroad track. It's a main line too. They run about 30 coal trains per day right by my house. That's in addition to the grain trains, mixed freights, road switch, etc. It's also on a main arterial route through town, so there's almost always traffic....especially when I want to get out of my driveway.

Not as close as I was - 53rd and Meade. They didn't fly right over the house, but darn near close.
You get used to it. I looked forward to 0 degree winter days when they were taking off in our direction. I just love the sound of jet engines cracking in the cold weather.

Rent. Might go lookin' for a house to buy in a year or so. Depends on how it goes as far as getting a loan paid off early so we can do the payments.

Unfortunately it is the opposite for us, LOL. They fly over in summer but change routs in winter. They are not close enough to rattle windows or anything, but ya can hear em!
Personally, I kinda like it... but being from the country the traffic at all hours still bugs me...
Well let me see, my property is bound on the west side by a very busy train track and the west side of that a public park. On the other 3 sides is a largest shopping mall in Kentucky, to the east serveral strip centers (mini shopping centers not a place for stripper to meet). My southern neighbors are a WalMart supper store and Lowe's. The satellite image below will give you and idea of what I mean. We are located at the red A.

Normally it's pretty quiet in our neighborhood, that is except for the drug dealing kids that live next door and next door to them. lol
We live on a corner so we always hear the cars that don't stop at the stop sign squeal their brakes when they realize that maybe they should have stopped!
Then there is the little airport behind us that is usually used just by company planes. In the summer they are constantly taking off and landing. Sometimes I fear they're going to land on top of my house.
Other than that it's pretty quiet. LOL

Living in Wisconsin there are long stretches in the spring and fall that it's comfortable to have the windows open. It's normally pretty quiet except for dogs in the neighborhood. We had to call the cops on the folks in back of us, and they finally shut their yappers up. Aside from that, it's pretty darn quiet.

I live out in the "country" 14 miles from the city. I hear dogs.....lots of damn dogs barking at everything from some idiot that might steal my stuff to their own shadows or the Lady Bug crawling on their water bowl. I really wish they would learn to differentiate the matter!

I used to live in Queens NY... Endless noise 24hs of bars, people, garbage trucks, the EL usually just blended to a din you got used to.... my only complaint was car alarms.... somehow you could never park less than 4 blocks from you apartment so if the alarms went off the went until the batteries died.... thunderstorms were the worst... a crack of thunder followed by a block of alarms all night.
My neighborhood in Philly is surprisingly quiet... lots of abandoned properties and empty lots... punctuated by the occasional gun shot or knock down drag out in the street domestic dispute... total quiet sort of freaks me out I have never lived anywhere really quiet.

Nooooooooo. I kinda got away from the partying a long time ago. Worked pretty demanding jobs that took a lot of my time. I didn't even get to spend much time in my shop, like I like to.

I live out in the sticks. Lots of dogs. Heck, even out outside dog barks most of the night. I ignore them, unless it sounds really "odd". Also, since we're out in the sticks, lots and lots of gunshots.
I can hear the traffic on I-44, even though it's over a mile away. There's a county fairground/dirt racetrack about 5 miles away, and we can hear the cars on that when they're racing.
Once the weather starts to warm up, it will get more interesting, sound-wise. Frogs and toads. Crickets. Owls. T-storms.
Of course, with 5 active kids, well, it's always loud in here. Heck, one of my step-sons INSISTS on turning the TV volume up to full whenever he can. We don't know why. We've had his hearing tested, and he hears fine.

Oh, I forgot about the dogs in my "quiet" neighborhood! We have one house that lets their dog out like clockwork at 5 am and leaves him on the deck til 7 when they leave for work. All it does is yap, yap, yap!!

the problem dogs are mine... they're bad.. bark at the wind
One of my neighbors had a rooster (street rescue) with a bad sense of dawn... very strange being woke by a rooster in the city at 3am... haven't heard him in awhile though maybe their cats finally did him in

We are fairly quiet. The ring road and a motorway not very far away, but the double glazing is good. Car alarms occasionally, children (my own) lots - they definitely need volume controls. My youngest talking "quietly" to his brother can be heard all over the house.

I've enjoyed reading about how all of you guys live...makes everyone more real, instead of a signal being transmitted via computer! We live in a small town (about 7,000) on a quiet street (well, it's a dirt road, really), but Mexico is not a quiet place for the most part, as anyone who has been here knows (Lily?). Right now, I can hear distant dogs barking and a rooster crowing. Yes, it is almost midnight, but Mexican roosters don't know all the rules, I guess. I can hear a gecko chirping right behind me as well. (Lots of geckos live with us in our house - they do a good job of eating bugs). We can usually hear music somewhere in the distance. Mexicans have lots of holidays and lots of fiestas that usually involve noisy fireworks. The noise is part of the culture, and as long as it is someone having a good time, it doesn't really bother us.

I live in the country, but there's houses around. My neighbor lives right next to the tracks, but I'm only 100 yards or so away. Busiest tracks in the US I was told.... 70 some trains/day linking NYC and Chicago. Three whistles everytime they cross my road, but they only bother you if you are outside on the phone or talking with someone. Lots of trucks and tractors, too, since it's grape country here and I'm only a few miles from Welch's. The only real "noise" is my neighbor on the other side. She's a loud-talker and likes the neighborhood to know when she has company (lol).

I forgot to mention the livestock. Our close-by neighbors have cattle, chickens, guineas, and horses. A neighbor that lives about 1/4 mile away, but within easy eyesight, I believe has domestic turkeys, as I occasionally hear a gobble from that direction.

For eighteen years, we lived in Orlando, a block from a main east-west road. Sirens all day and night, in addition to normal traffic noises. When we sold out and moved into our RV, we spent two years next to a main line of the UP through Paxico, KS (30 mi W of Topeka). We got used to the trains, even though they blew their horns super loud for the local crossing, railroad was mad that the town and county made them put up signal lights. But no sirens. Then we went to Harlingen, Texas, followed by Tanner, Alabama. Rare to ever hear a siren. Now I'm out in the county about five miles, no sounds except the occasional dog barking or an occasional plane overhead. Gotta love it!!

it's like a biblical plague of locusts on those weekends....everything on the shelves that can be grilled or eaten on bread is gone, along with the beer
