Sort of. My wife runs her own business as a Professional Gardener, and I was helping her part time with hard-scaping (flagstone walks, steppers, walls, etc) and also being a stay at home dad.
However, had several heart attacks last Feb and they discovered blockages so I had a triple bi-pass. So, I am kinda out of commission right now and just doing the stay at home dad part and her books for her.

OK I just re-read his post, I am real sorry to hear that Mojito!
Yes when I first got married and had kids. I worked as a Sheet Metal worker at the time and we got laid off in November and rehired in January. Oh and we lived in Miami Florida so it wasn't weather related. I still hate Christmas due to it. I quit the trade in 1979 and moved on. Now my wife and I are retired and own a small storage facility.

Just Rx meds, about 12 of them I think, LOL. Some for the heart (it was damaged plus there are blockages on the back of the heart that can't be fixed), some for the diabetes, and some for depression and anxiety.
But, I will be fine! Quit smoking, lost some weight. The funny thing was about 6 weeks after the surgery, I had appendicitis!! Talk about adding insult to injury, LOL. '08 was an interesting year, that's for sure!

Jan 1, 1974 - Nov 24, 1975 (Arab oil embargo - thanks a lot you bastards). I doubt it feels any worse today than it did then. Downturns suck.

I got laid off early in the "Cycle" Frankly the assholes should have never hired me. They knew I took the job as a relocation and left a good company to do it. my boss laid me off the week he came back from vacation in Europe with his son. where were you?... not trying to get new business that's for sure. Anyway it sucked but I HATED that job.. aside from my financial concerns I was happy to never have to go there again. It took me awhile to find a new one... about 3mons. I am hanging tight now.. I really like my new job and believe the MGMT is doing the best they can to keep us all working... but times are scary and our clients are scrambling for funding etc so things are uncertain.
I have always been pretty confident when it comes to work but right now I am scared as hell. I certainly don't want to end up in my parents basement... Thank god for them though at least I know they are there... they just got the shaft big time from the Archdiocese of NY though so they are hurting too.

Haven't worked here since April.
I wasn't kidding when I said it's as bad here as it is in Austin.
But the only family I have left is my dad and niece here, and a
brother in Jersey. Plus houses aren't selling since '06 - hurricane
Wilma. People smartin'd up about buying since then. Damn it.
But health is ok, knock on wood.
Mav, what a year for you. Your bad things is 3s is over.
Blessings to you and your family.

I worked for a company called Sodexho for years....A little more than a year ago, a previous director called me to ask if I'd be interested in taking the lead position at the New York Stock Exchange. Jumped at the opportunity and spent 8 months there. Then :shitHitsFan:I find myself covering at all sorts of other accounts - Tiffany's on Fifth Ave, Merril Lynch, the Rockefeller Foundation...but no home of my own. The middle of November I get officially laid off. What really angered me is that I left a perfectly secure position for this gig....and no real 'gee, we're so sorry, ect, no severence, no nothing', just a 'here's your hat, what's your hurry?'.
The day I got laid off was November 11. My exhusband's girlfriend got laid off the following day. She worked in the camera/film industry with moviemakers and producers. My son got laid off a week later. He's a recent college graduate and was doing web design for Ashley Stewart. My daughter, involved in the fashion industry got laid off from Bloomingdales three weeks ago. She also took the job at Bloomingdales with promises of it not being a holiday hiring, and left a perfectly good job for that. My exhusband's business, where he worked for 20 years as a marketing director closed the end of December.
At this time, I've since been reemployed by Compass Group as a Director of Dining Services. I took a tiny pay cut but I can live with it. I was unemployed for just 4 weeks, and believe me, I know I am one of the lucky ones.
My exhusband was only unemployed for two weeks. He knew his company was closing for a couple of years so he had time to set something up. He also got a killer bonus for staying till the very end.
His girlfriend has taken two part time jobs after being unemployed for just over 2 months.
My son and my daughter are still unemployed.
Through all of it, only my boyfriend Lou was unscathed.
I've never been laid off, but my corporate job was eliminated in 2001. I took a year off and went fishing every day until a friend asked me to help him get a business back in the black. After 2 years I got sales up, computerized the office, straitened out engineering (brought in CAD) and manufacturing (fired the derelicts and hired people with a work ethic) to where it was profitable, but he didn't want to pay me what I worth, nor would he give me an equity position in the business. So I left and started a Handyman business, and it's been running great for over 4 years. No, I don't make the six figure income I did in corporate work, but I don't have ulcers and I don't have to piss on people and treat them badly because that's the way the company wants it run. I feel more like a human being now than I ever have. I sleep well at night and have a clean conscience. Oh, and I eat better now than I did back then.

In 1972, when I got out of the Air Force, it took me five months to find a job. We had to sell out and move from L.A. back to Georgia with my in-laws to be able to make ends meet. At that time the Southeast had more jobs advertised in the newspapers than any other area. The experience scared me badly enough that I always kept my ear to the ground, and managed to find another job within months before the one I was in was going to peter out. A year and a half ago, my company called me in to warn of an imminent layoff. I manged to transfer to a different division and escape the ax, but I hated the job. Last April, I retired. I'm making about half of what I used to make on my fixed income, but my expenses have been reduced to more than make up the difference. I feel fortunate that I don't have to worry about being laid off in the current economy.
My heart and prayers go out to all those who have been laid off, or have had to close their businesses. Best of luck to all of you, and may you all land on your feet.

Since we are talking about the past as well, the only time I got officially laid off from a company was when the telecommunications bubble burst. The company moved everything except the technicians to telecommunications row in Herndon, VA. Since I was a Sales Engineer, I would have had to relocate there, but since we just bought our house and it was a fixer upper I couldn't... so, they laid me off but with an nice severance package to help out.
