I have to say, it is so refreshing to have been here a short while and not see anyone refer to anyone else's food or recipe suggestion as "crap in a box". Granted, the daily post count isn't as high as on other cooking forums, but I like to think we have a good crowd here who enjoys food and chatting and isn't so concerned about dissing someone else's food or the way they were brought up.
I know that if I had learned the phrase crap in a box when I was a child, I would have gone to my room without eating that meal

Pretty refreshing!

Here, here, ch. Hey, I gotta agree there. When PieSusan mentioned nat'l Pie Day, and I advertised my favorite, I sure did expect insults.
Was surprised I didn't get any you know where.
I'm not a pie baker, try as I might, but why should I do without.
Life's short, we all do what we gotta do to maintain and enjoy the best we can with what we got.

"crap in a box".

We can ask Doc to add that phrase to the filter so it will never appear again :yum:

I think we quadrupled the original post count. tee hee

looks like around 900 new posts in the last few days. Total of 4,431 a few minutes ago.

Here, here, ch. Hey, I gotta agree there. When PieSusan mentioned nat'l Pie Day, and I advertised my favorite, I sure did expect insults.

Doc lets me have my International Talk Like a Pirate Day on one of his other forums so I don't think there will be any problem at all with National Pie Day!

Time to get a little windy here. I belong to a couple fly fishing clubs and they have the same problem that some (not all) food sites have. ELITISM. Even if you don't fish, you may have a preconceived notion that fly fishing is something that takes lots of practice and is very expensive. Truth be told, I can teach anybody to cast a fly rod in about 15 minutes to where you could go to a stream and be competent enough to cast the line and maybe even catch a fish. IT AIN'T ROCKET SCIENCE! There is a whole faction of people who have fly fished their whole lives, and some who have even made their living doing so, that will tell you that it takes years to get proficient and that to do it right you need to buy this fly rod or those waders or this or that and on and on. They scare the newbie off before the echo of "I want to learn to fly fish" has left the air. I have taught the Boy Scout Fly Fishing Merit Badge, have taught 6 year olds to tie flies, and am a regular fly fishing and fly tying instructor for Women in the Outdoors at many of their events. I'm nobody special, but I can teach anyone who wants to learn to do this.

It appears to me, since joining the other site, that Foodies experience the same sort of elitism. People come into the site seeking help to learn the basics of cooking to feed themself or their families, and are told they need Bobby Flay cast iron pots or Wun Hung Lo's ceramic knives to prepare corned beef hash or a BLT, or that you are an unwashed commoner if you don't have a wheel of Parmesan in the house at all times. What's wrong with these people? Why would you want to scare the newbie off when all they want to do is learn to feed themselves? Do those people feel that if a newbie learned something that they would become a threat to their dominance on the forum? I would consider it an honor if one of my students outshone me in something I was theaching them. It reflects well on both of us, and we should continually lift up each success of the newbie and cheer them on to the day they can make a loaf of bread that is light & airy, or a soup that their family goes back for seconds on, or a blue ribbon apple pie. This is what makes people want to learn more, and they will then teach others, to where every day a new table is better off than the day before because we helped someone when they first came asking.

I ask each of you to never forget where you came from. Everyone has a first day at everything, and we are who we are because someone took the time to help us along the way.

You should post this at the other site!

I posted a similar commentary on a Steelhead Fishing website, and was banned from the site for doing so. The site had turned into more of a blog for a handful of people (clique), and newbies would be trashed and flamed for asking basic questions. I came to their defense and got banned in the process. I went to another site and was welcomed in because of my philosophy and willingness to help teach newbies. I have over 2,700 posts since 2006 on that site, and have fished all across the US with people I have met there. Sharing & Caring is their motto, and it works.

Naw, I won't waste the time on the other site. There are too many egos that would be bruised, and it would not change anything. Change has to come from the top, and they have things the way they want them. It was a good stepping stone for me in my cooking and baking hobby, and it looks like we can have some fun here and teach people in the process.

Joe, put your name in the hat for MOD. You don't have enough to do already.
Although I don't think I'm guilty of having my nose in the air-especially about food, I was guilty of getting absolutely FED UP at the self centered, woosie thread posted about a guy not wanting to get married and his family getting down on him about it.
OMG! I think I only have 5 strawberry blonde hairs left on my head! And I just couldn't help headbutting with that guy. But boy did he send me childish PMs. I just had to publicly post one too! ME BAD! ME SCORPIO!

The motorcycle site I frequent get's a ton of n00bs. Alot of them are just kids, and you wouldn't dare flame anyone there. The subforum I frequent has "Moderators" listed but they are never there. We actually moderate the forum ourselves, me and a small group of others ranging from 30-50+ years old. They also have a rep. system in place but unlike any other I have seen. Some like it, some hate it. It's the Gas System. When you want to give praise to a post "Good Gas" you click on the little gas can and leave a message which is anonymous unless you sign it. You can also leave "Bad Gas" to those who leave insults or anything similar and leave a message as well. If you're a stand-up person you'll sign Bad Gas, if not you're a wuss.

The cool thing is, lol, if you get too much Bad Gas you will "Run Out of Gas" and be automatically banned. All from other users and not the Admins/Mods.

There's a couple forums where you can only leave "Neutral Gas" meaning no rep points are added or taken away. These are the forums where polotics and such are discussed, or any forum off-topic from anything motorcycles.

Under your Username is your gas guage "E-------F", so the public sees your reputation. I'm at 3/4 tank right now which is pretty good. Most tanks are 1/4-1/2 full. You start off with 1/8 tank but if you blow it, your a gonner.

That's the whole idea, it keeps people in check. This site is about 100 times larger than DC with a bunch of different forums/sub forums, so it's hard for real-life people to moderate each post. Right now there's 1200 users online. lol

They took it away once (as a joke) and everyone bitched. Some didn't, but for the most part everyone likes it.

In the quad forum I used to belong to when I had my rappy, they had a bad karma system, but it didn't get you banned if you received too much. It just got you pissed off. As soon as some of the guys figured out who the whiners were, they would bombard them with bad karma just to see them blow a gasket. It was an anything goes forum, including the mods and site owner joining in, but everyone kept things pretty much under the right topic so there wasn't any need to step in and moderate anybody. Only those people who popped in to sell something and spread their links all over.
